As a retired Chartered Librarian who lives in North Yorkshire, with over 30 years in Public and school libraries.. this is why I will NEVER volunteer at our community managed library https://twitter.com/wylie_alan/status/1529696857533960192

The ‘Library Volunteering’ section of the North Yorkshire CC website is just a list of tasks that paid & trained Library Workers do, this isn’t volunteering or assisting it’s eroding, undermining & ultimately replacing staff 🤷‍♀️

WHAT DO LIBRARY WORKERS DO? Today, my @afscmeDC47 librarian coworker connected patrons to homeless services, helped ppl log onto the internet, held a virtual cmty mtg, helped a child select "the best book." All while moving tables, chairs & supplies to a park! @Darrell_Clarke

100% must-read thread for those of us concerned w #library sector development. Brilliant analysis of why Govt struggles with some elements of policy for #LevellingUp & why we urgently need to strengthen the evidence for the impact of funded improvement to community infrastructure https://twitter.com/NicoleSykes_/status/1529010456400101376

Nicole Sykes@NicoleSykes_

Ultimately DCMS are fleshing out the argument that social capital & community infrastructure are important to deliver thriving communities + level up.
I'd say they need some support from practioners to untangle some of this + evidence. But a fair first step post-white paper 19/19
