I have read some of the information on here. I wish we had the money to just buy our library. We are The Friends of The Libraries. Darlington Council are closing our Library in Crown Street, Darlington. The excuse is they can not afford to run it. The Library was built for the People of Darlington in 1886 paid for by Edward Pease he left 10,000 pound the Land has a Covenant on it which our Council say they have lost and other times they say it never had one. there is an affidavit which was registered by the Borough Solicitor in the 80’s. This Council is wanting to move the library in to the dolphin centre in the market place, this is the sport centre. They say it will save money, but it is going to cost the Council £1.1 million pd. back over 26 yrs to move it. We want to save this building it is beautiful we took signatures from the town to say they wanted to keep the library where it is. We don’t know what is planned it is a listed building so shelves, doors even the steps up into the Library are listed.. This is not the only listed building the Council has closed our Art Centre was listed that has gone. This Council has no idea of Heritage what they have done with the town’s money. If you do read this I suggest you look for Crown Street Library, the Archives run the full length of the library. We have no idea what will happen to them but the town will lose them all.
